《功能語法導論》是M.A.K.Halliday介紹功能語法理論的經典學術著作，自1985年第一版出版以來，就成為國內外許多大學講授功能語法的基本教科書。本書是M.A.K.Haliday與Christian Matthiessen對第二版進行廣泛修訂后推出的第三版，與上一版相比，第三版的更新主要體現在：
1.增加了系統網絡的內容。語言是系統的系統。作為功能語法的主要支柱，系統語法的內容在第3版獲得凸現。
2.從小句描寫走向語篇分析。系統功能語法不同于以句子為描寫對象的形式語法或轉換生成語法，它把語篇作為分析目標。
3.基于語料庫的論述。韓禮德對語料庫的研究外感興趣，也一直試圖把這個領域的內容用到他的語言研究中。
4.理論的修訂與擴展。第3版在章節安排上進行了調整，加減少了句子成分的內容，為系統網絡和語篇的描寫和分析提供了空間。
