Ancient readers considered the two New Testament books to have been written by the same author, and modern scholars have generally gone a step further by asserting that they are in fact two parts to a single story. Some disagree, most notably Mikeal C. Parsons and Richard I. Pervo in their 1993 Rethinking the Unity of Luke and Acts. Heading this anthology, Pervo places that work in the context of current scholarship, and is followed by other scholars of the Bible, religion, and church history who support the idea that though the books were written by the same author, they are two separate works with different purposes. Among the topics are whether reception history is pertinent to literary criticism, reading Luke-Acts as Luke and Acts, the Book of Acts as narrative commentary on the letters of the New Testament, and hearing Acts as a sequel to a multiform gospel.
