Susan Meller focuses on her favorite textiles, the printed-cotten fabrics created and manufactured in Russia from about 1860 to 1960, speciafically for export to Central Asia. Virtually all the textiles in this book are from the author's collection and are being reproduced here for the first time.
This book explores through cloth the political, economic, and cultural ties between Russia and Central Asia, giving the reader both insight into this complex region and an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of its textiles - many of which have been hidden from view inside the robes they lined.
Russian Textiles showcases more than 190 spectacular patterns spanning a variety of periods and styles, ranging from Art Nouveau florals to Soviet-era agitprop. Essays by the author and fellow textile experts Kate Fitz Gibbon and Annie Carlano describe the "social life" of the fabrics and the fascinating history of this merging of Russian, Central Asian, and Western aesthetic styles. Robert Kushner contributes a text on how an artist "sees" and is inspired by these designs. Complementing the pattern images are vintage photographs from Cental Asia at the turn of the twentieth century as well as detailed reproductions of the robes and other articles that were lined and embellished with these cloths. In all, more than 250 reproductions are included.
