John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was the most talented, prolific and successful painter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Following the break-up of this short-lived avant garde movement, he went on to become the most famous and successful, as well as one of the most creative, of all Victorian painters. He was unique in pioneering a new land of psychological realism in art, presenting human beings in complex situations from the past and present that engage the viewer's empathy.
