商品簡介

Popular Politics and Resistance Movements in South Africa self-consciously attempts not to be corralled in by a nationalist framework with a strong inclination to celebrate and justify current regimes of power. By focusing their attention on popular movements and resistance the authors make an important contribution to the historiography on South Africa's liberation struggle. Their work, mostly unencumbered by the burden of past political involvement and loyalties, brings an overdue freshness of approach and analysis to one of the most important aspects of South African history.

Noor Nieftagodien, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg

This edited volume brings to the fore the vibrant intellectual work of a new generation of scholars. The chapters are refreshing in their bridging of theoretical paradigms, their ability not to be constrained by existing schools of thought. They are defined by a willingness to use the insights of comparative African historiography - resource mobilization, political opportunity and new social movement theories, and even Marxist and liberal ideological paradigms - to tell the stories of the struggle of South Africa's poor and marginalised. A must read for anyone interested in the social transformation underway in South Africa, and in the future of democracy and development in the country. Adam Habib, University of Johannesburg

This volume explores some of the key features of popular politics and resistance before and after 1994. It looks at continuities and changes in the forms of struggle and ideologies involved, as well as the significance of post-apartheid grassroots politics. Is this a new form of politics or does it stand as a direct descendent of the insurrectionary impulses of the late apartheid era? Posing questions about continuity and change before and after 1994 raises key issues concerning the nature of power and poverty in the country. Contributors suggest that expressions of popular politics are deeply set within South African political culture and still have the capacity to influence political outcomes.
