The last stage of sleep is called Rapid Eye Movement （REM）. Dreams affect the body sinternal processes. An exciting dream will cause the dreamer s heart to beat faster and the blood pressure to increase. Researchers have also learned that eye movements are linked to dreaming. Rapid eye movement is a sign a person is dreaming. During a dream the dreamer s eyes usually move rapidly back and forth behind closed eyelids （眼瞼）. It is as if the dreamer were a spectator watching what goes on in the dream. Sometimes the eye movements are up and down. The dreamers then report dreams about people or objects moving up or down. When little or no eye movement is registered, dreamers report they have been simply watching something stationary or talking in the dreams. In general, rapid eye movements indicate that the dreamer is taking an active part in the dreams. Dreaming sleep is now called REM sleep. Research with blind people also shows the relationship between dreams and eye move ments.When people have been blind all their lives, their eyes do not move when they dream. The sepeople only feel or hear what is happening in their dreams. But people who become blind later in life do move their eyes while dreaming.
