In focusing on the now generally-forgotten verse of eleven 18th and 19th centuries doctors of the mind--Darwin Erasmus being the best known, Faubert (English, University of Manitoba) argues that this genre provides insights into the relationship between science and poetry in the Romantic period, and into the modern compartmentalization of disciplines. What these early psychologists shared is the liberal education of the Scottish Enlightenment, and other Romantic writers' emphasis on subjectivity and the benefits of modest living in tune with nature. From a Foucaultian postmodern perspective, however, these efforts to communicate with the general public about the value of thinking about the mind in this popular form ironically resulted in the profession's greater specialization and power.
