Ancient Greek cultic practices are explored in this volume, which originated at a 2004 conference at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. Jensen, of the University of Aarhus, and his colleagues present a variety of ways to approach the subject. The first essay explains the use of the term "cult" and why scholars of religion rarely use it, whereas the term is appropriate for archaeologists. The following essays are based largely on physical evidence, including epigraphy at archaeological sites. Three of the essays deal with the cult of Asklepios, particularly in Athens. The reason for the introduction of this god of healing into Greek worship is reconsidered. Two papers treat the evidence for the location of the altar and the sanctuary. The ways in which divinity and kingship combine are shown in the Philippeion at Olympia. Two ethnomusicologists present work based on both texts and art. And, in Greek votive art, we find that sometimes a basket is only a basket; or is it? There are many color photographs of the artifacts. Each essay is complete with citations and a bibliography.
