For several decades archeologists have been working at the medieval ruins of Coptic and Nubian Christian settlements in Southern Egypt. Authors Lajtar and van der Vliet have combined their linguistic expertise to decipher inscriptions found on walls and stelae at Qasr Ibrim. In this compendium of discoveries made since 1963, the authors describe each piece, transcribe it, and give an English translation with a photograph. They then analyze the inscriptions for every scrap of information. This reveals saints venerated locally, a high ratio of women to men commemorated, that bishops seemed to have long lifespans and many other pieces of information. The findings are compared with other local discoveries. Students of early Christianity as well as historians and linguists will find this meticulous study extremely useful.
