Bennett, a former reference librarian who lives in England, explains the origins of the placenames of about 1,600 Civil War sites, including cities, towns, villages, railroad stations, forts, camps, islands, rivers, creeks, fords, and ferries, as well as military academies, arsenals, factories, iron works and navy yards, supply deports, prison camps, and hospitals that were part of the economic and industrial infrastructure. He draws from guidebooks, dictionaries, gazeteers, and histories to give information on their Civil War connections, the state, and county or parish, and includes alternate names.
