The Gujjars are Muslim, yet have developed their own distinctive brand of Islam having lived in relative isolation for a long time. Those who live in Rajaji National Park in India are known as the forest dwelling Gujjars, and these days their isolation is breaking down because of plans for relocation outside the park in the interests of forest conservation. Singh (Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, UK) reviews the literature on this Muslim ethnic group and on other such groups, finding that virtually all studies have been concerned with ethnicity rather than religion. The present study focuses on the Gujjar religion, the evolving contact with mainstream Islam of this people and other Muslim indigenous groups, and the implications of that contact for identities in transition.
