Augustine's works deal with many topics in philosophical psychology and anthropology. Itteaches such cosmological doctrines as the "seed-reasons" by which creatures are givenintelligible form. It elaborates in subtle detail the distinguishable "traces" of Father, Son,and Spirit in the created world and particularly in the human soul's triad of memory,intellect, and will. The following doctrines are typically attributed to Augustine：
1. The Theory of Illumination
One of Augustine' s doctrines concerns divine "illumination" of the human intellect,i. e. , some active intervention by God in ordinary processes of human understanding.Like Plato, he thinks of the soul as inhabiting and deploying the body. He says, "Man is,as far as we can see, a rational soul making use of a mortal and material body. " At the same time, because of his Christian conviction that God creates each soul when a humanbeing comes into existence, he does not endorse Plato's view of the soul as being in exilefrom its real home during its habitation of a human body. Though he holds that allknowledge is the product of the rational soul, he believes that it may be of two kinds of objects： objects of sense and objects known independently of sense experience, the latter beingperceived by the mind "through itself'. In the case of sensory knowledge he regards the mind asusing the bodily senses as instruments for obtaining knowledge and thus of perception asfundamentally an activity of mind；for the mind at its highest intellectual level is able, he says,to judge and interpret the information it is made aware of through the senses. For Augustine, thehighest intellectual activity results in an illumination of certain ultimate and eternal truths whichare latent in all human minds. These truths, he maintains, furnish us with standards againstwhich we make our judgments of how things should be, and in apprehending them.
