A Companion to Boethius in the Middle Ages

Part of an estimable series, this volume contains twelve essays on the editions, influence, and treatment of the works of Boethius throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Written by scholars based in many academic centers throughout Europe, as well as in New Zealand and the U.S., the essays explore such topics as the use of Boethius's works on logic, his influence on theology and metaphysics, the translations of De consolatione philosophiae in France, and his influence on German literature. The depth of Boethius's influence in European culture is made clear throughout the volume, with examples in all the essays and as a special focus in the chapters on De insitutione arithmetica, the legacy of Boethian harmony, and the history of the Quadrivium. An introduction by Kaylor (English, Troy U., Alabama) on Boethius's life and times, an afterword by Fabio Troncarelli (U. of Viterbo, Italy), and an annotated bibliography by Phillips (Middle Tennessee State U.) round out the volume. Noel Harold Kaylor, Jr., Ph.D. (1985) in comparative literature, Vanderbilt University, is Professor of English at Troy University. He has published extensively on Boethius, including The Medieval Consolation of Philosophy (1992), John Bracegirdle’s Psychopharmacon (1999), New Directions in Boethian Studies (2007), and The Consolation of Queen Elizabeth I (2009). He is co-editor of Carmina Philosophiae and Executive Director of the International Boethius Society. Philip Edward Phillips, Ph.D. (1996) in English, Vanderbilt University, is Interim Associate Dean of the University Honors College and Professor of English at Middle Tennessee State University. He is the author of John Milton’s Epic Invocations (2000) and the coeditor of New Directions in Boethian Studies (2007) and The Consolation of Queen Elizabeth I (2009). He is co-editor of Carmina Philosophiae and Secretary of the International Boethius Society.
