Two and a half centuries since Obeah was first criminalized in Jamaica, say Handler (emeritus, anthropology and black American studies, Southern Illinois U.-Carbondale) and Bilby (anthropology, Smithsonian Institute), laws remain in all but four Anglophone Caribbean countries prohibiting the beliefs and practices brought by slaves from Africa, though prosecutions have become rare.
