書摘/試閱

1 I lost one of my legs on August 21, 1919, when I wasnine years old. That day my father gave me 50 cents to get a haircut: 35 cents for the haircut, five cents for a tip, 10 cents for trolley fare. At least that was the way he figured it. I, a calculating kid, figured it a little differently. I had seen anoffer on a sign in a downtown New Haven window: PROF. AMOROSO, BARBER ACADEMY -- HAIRCUTS 15 CENTS -- NO TIPPING. By hitching a ride on the back of an ice cart I could step into Professor Amoroso's with 50 cents and, with luck, step out again with most of the money intact.Clutching that 50-cent piece, blinded with dreams of riches and power, I jumped off the ice cart in front of the barber acad-emy -- and directly into the path of a huge trolley car. I was caught under the wheels and before the car could be stopped my left leg was cut off at the thigh.
2 During the ride to the hospital and later, while I was under anesthetic, I never once un-clutched that half dollar. My mother finally took it from me. For years afterward she kept that coin, the kind of sad memento that only mothers understand, in the drawer of her sewing machine. I used to find her now and then, staring into the open drawer and quietly weeping. (A dozen years later, during the Depression, she opened the drawer again, stared at the coin for the last time, and marched to the grocery store with it.)
3 Losing a leg at nine is not all loss. For one thing it made me a celebrity among the other kids. True, I was not much good at baseball or wrestling, but then I never had been much good at them, and now I was spared the embarrassment of displaying my awkwardness. As for grown-ups, they suddenly noticed the spiritual qualities in me as a slow-moving, one-legged boy, which had been totally hidden from them when I was a fast-moving two-legger. Gifts poured in from formerly unheard-of relatives. With two legs I bad been a nobody. With one leg I was somebody.
