Environmental Conflict and the Media

In this anthology accessible to more advanced students and other readers, Lester (journalism, media, and communication, University of Tasmania) and Hutchins (media studies, Monash University, Australia) gather work on the use of media in environmental activism. Analyzing cases from around the world, contributors examine not only the media's role in the communication of global environmental threats, but also how threats to the environment are enacted on the public stage through media. Some specific subjects investigated include the early press and National Parks advocacy, activist videos on YouTube, celebrities and environmentalism, media coverage of the Fukushima nuclear meltdown, and the anti-elite rhetoric of climate change skepticism. Libby Lester (PhD, University of Melbourne) is Professor of Journalism, Media and Communications at the University of Tasmania. She is the author of Media and Environment: Conflict, Politics and the News (2010) and co-editor with Simon Cottle of Transnational Protests and the Media (Peter Lang, 2011). Her research has appeared in Media, Culture & Society, International Journal of Communication, Journalism, Journalism Studies and Media International Australia. She has also worked as a journalist for leading Australian newspapers and magazines.
Brett Hutchins (PhD, University of Queensland) is Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Research Unit in Media Studies at Monash University. His most recent articles appear in Media, Culture & Society, Information, Communication & Society, International Journal of Communication and Journalism: Theory, Practice & Criticism. His books include Sport Beyond Television: The Internet, Digital Media and the Rise of Networked Media Sport (2012).
