This catalogue accompanies a scholarly exhibition by the same name, which begins its national tour at the Tacoma Art Museum February-June, 2004, in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Drawing parallels between the two-centuries-old journals of Lewis and Clark and contemporary visual arts, it highlights the role of contemporary artists as modern-day explorers of the American landscape and as journalists reporting on the American experience. The text includes a detailed essay by Hushka (associate curator, Tacoma Art Museum) on ways in which place, race, and memory reverberate across the span of two centuries.
