This volume explores challenges faced by both parents and children in trilingual families and draws from a research study of 70 families in England and Germany, as well as information from web forums and emails. Organizing chapters by situations where monolingual parents are living abroad, one or both parents are bilingual, or one or both parents are trilingual, it considers the questions of how parents' competence in their home and community languages influence their decision to use those languages with their children; what strategies they use at home and outside to foster specific languages with their children; how their choices are influenced by their linguistic and cultural backgrounds; and the impact of the beliefs and attitudes of members of the extended family and other people on their language practices. They also address the issue of uncertainty about when to introduce a third language to a child, being consistent about using specific languages at home and outside, mixing languages, developing a minority language, difficulties at school, and children's sense of identity. 作者簡介

Andreas Braun is Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Primary and Community Care, University of Hertfordshire. His research focuses on language practices of trilingual families with children, incomplete acquisition of heritage languages, education and trilingualism, multiculturalism, third language acquisition and multilingualism in monolingual societies.
Tony Cline is Co-Director of the CPD Doctorate in Educational Psychology, University College London. His research interests include the education of bilingual children, selective mutism, literacy learning difficulties of bilingual pupils, the education of minority ethnic children in mainly white schools and child language brokering at school.
