Following a chapter on major philosophical and psychological theories of the causes and consequences of death anxiety in adult life, the core of this volume consists of six chapters that provide in-depth reviews of the best available measures of death attitudes, from extensions and refinements of widely used instruments for measuring death anxiety, threat, and fear, to more recent scales assessing a range of death concerns and competencies. There are also several chapters illustrating the potential relevance of death anxiety in applied contexts such as nursing homes, psychotherapy, and death education, and in understanding the experience of bereaved young adults, persons with AIDS, and near-death experiencers.
