Professor Emeritus of History, Felix, presents his unauthorized biography of the diplomat and later public intellectual, George F. Kennan (1904-2005). Speaking Russian and well-versed in the Soviet economy, Kennan was the man given the most credit for America’s post-WWII policy of containment of Russian expansion, i.e., the Cold War. Entering foreign service at the age of 23, in 1927, he was in the American embassy in Berlin when WWII broke out, was involved in the creation of the Marshall Plan, and quizzed Roosevelt on two questions, which became the springboard that launched Kennan into international work. Not a fan of war by 1950, he began to backpedal regarding the military component of Cold War policy and lived to see the collapse of the Soviet economy, which he had predicted.
