The Concept of Justice and Equality ─ On the Dispute Between John Rawls and Gerald Cohen

This study analyzes differing views of justice in the philosophy of John Rawls and Gerald Cohen, emphasizing that Rawls’s theory of justice is the theory of the social contract, while Cohen prefers the conceptual analysis method of investigating our beliefs about justice. Part 1 of the book focuses on conceptions of justice as examined by Rawls and Cohen, and the different methods they employ in order to explain the idea of justice. Part 2 considers the idea of equality and its ties to the idea of justice. Part 3 considers disagreements between Rawls and Cohen on the definition and fundamental principles of justice, and the impact of these disagreements on the principles of distributive justice.
