The Harvest of American Racism ― The Political Meaning of Violence in the Summer of 1967

This book presents a previously unpublished report written by social scientists of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, called The Harvest of American Racism; The Political Meaning of Violence in the Summer of 1967, which compared violence and civil unrest in 23 American cities. In an introduction, editor Robert Shellow, one the report’s original authors, explains that the report was considered was controversial because it pointed to political causes for civil unrest, and notes that the report was actively suppressed. Shellow’s introduction provides historical context for understanding the report and offers his own comments as well as comments by three of the other authors of the report: David Boesel, Gary T. Marx, and David O. Sears. An appendix highlights the differences between the original 1967 report and the better-known Kerner Commission report that was later published in March 1968, called The Report of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders.
