這首《以利亞》是孟德爾頌逝世前一年，以舊約聖經中先知以利亞的故事為題材寫成的作品，成為浪漫派最偉大的宗教音樂之一。
作品全體分為二部。第一部：描寫西元前九世紀，一宜堅守耶和華信仰的以色列，介入了巴力（Baar）邪教，招致耶和華憤怒引發了旱荒。做此預言的以利亞，變成民眾憎恨的對象，但未幾即在他的力量下帶來恩惠之雨。第二部：以利亞再度受到迫害，躲到山中，在此遇見了耶和華。最後以利亞將巴力趕出以色列，自己昇天而去。
全曲內容充實，處處充滿迴響。特別是男高音演唱的「如果你們衷心求我」，以及女高音演唱的「以色列人啊，請聽上主的話」等最為出名。還有，男低音演唱的「Es ist genug!」雖然保守，但卻表現出以利亞堅強的意志。此外，無伴奏女聲三重唱的天使之歌「向山舉目」，則充滿無與倫比的美。最後描寫以利亞昇天情景的合唱曲，除了原有的戲劇氣氛外，也充滿著令人深深感動的高尚宗教情操。可說一齣將孟德爾頌的樂才，與巴赫以來德國音樂傳統融合開花的作品。
