Historically, research in child development has rigidly separated cognitive processes from social-emotional processes. However, many of the factors that influence self-regulation are also closely linked to cognitive development. For example, genetics, prenatal environment, relationships, language, and the ability to perceive physiological sensations are all links between emotion and cognition in child development. The first edition of this already classic volume showed significant progress in the effort to understand emotion-cognition integration. The current edition incorporates new longitudinal research demonstrating this integration during infancy and throughout early childhood. The chapters also incorporates new research methods based on technology advances that have greatly enlarged our ability to examine early human brain development.
