本書的主要內容是對聖經《創世記》作逐章逐節的注疏。作者羅伯特.薩克斯青年時代曾跟隨施特勞斯學習並討論《創世記》,本書包含了施特勞斯本人對《創世記》的理解(尤其體現在前幾章)。以及作者在之後的數十年間對此的思考所得。可以說,作者在書中詳盡地發展了施特勞斯理解《創世記》的進路。施特勞斯認為,人是《創世記》第一章最後的被改造物,也是最後可以與其道路─正確的道路(the right way)─相分離的存在物。而從《創世記》的文本引申出人所走向的那樣一條與上帝原出計畫不同的分離出來的道路─薩克斯將其稱為新道路(the new way),也即政治的、律法的道路─正是作者整部《創世記》義疏的主題。
