If there is any region of the US that requires, demands consideration of place as central to the construction of its literature, it is the South. Casemore (secondary education, George Washington U.) is keenly aware of the power of place at the subjective and social levels in Southern literature, and also skilled in the use of the interpretive tools of psychoanalysis, and uses both to account for the autobiographical roots of Southern knowledge and society. His choice of autobiography as a vehicle is no accident, and he traces the role of place within self-formation as he closely evaluates the Southern terrain of the mind, the ways in which language expresses landscape, the effects of white masculinity and Southern peculiarity, the uses of Southern inheritance of the role of place and its ambiguity in terms of being both "the home of others" and "my home."
